Well, I did not clarify who we really are - because I feel the point is not in knowing who we really are, the point is about transcending several concepts we have about ourselves. And, regarding 'the Puppet on the strings', I believe this is a pessimistic view. Great gurus say that when we completely transcend our own personality, we will be able to identify ourselves with the divine. I am not an authority to make that comment, but I do believe them.
